Chick Moving Day

I guess they aren't really moving, but just being shuffled a bit and set free to expand their world a little. We brought them home March 21st and after 3 weeks in their little heated brooder (really just an empty water trough)

we moved them into a cage in the coop on April 12 so that the older hens could get acquainted with the new tenants, yet still remain separate for a bit until the youngsters grew a bit more.

DH had added a new jungle gym using scrap lumber for them to play on - they loved it

They stayed in there for about 10 days and we turned them loose on Wednesday

Everyone will stay shut in and not be let out to free range for a few weeks until the little ones understand that this is home though they have access to the coop and chicken yard.

It took a little while, but they finally ventured into the yard

DH added a cement block to give them a stepping stone

The older ones won't be very happy since they are used to their freedom, but they'll be fine and it's only temporary.

DH also added a new roosting place in the yard

It was an instant hit with the guineas

The pecking order is being established

It'll take a few days for them to become acquainted, but everyone is settled in for the night.

And in a few weeks the 7 little ones will join them

They are so cute, and the sound must be deafening when it’s feeding time.
Out here in the Netherlands the people who eat eggs from their own chickens had quite a shock when the health ministry warned off to eat them anymore because of alarming high levels of PFAS found in them, all across the country. Not sure how it gets there, some say it’s from the worms (and they get it from the soil) the chickens eat, or from what they feed them. But the eggs from the big egg farms are apparently safe.
Have a lovely weekend

You will certainly have an abundance of eggs when they're laying. I always like watching the chickens play.

Wow what a great venture! They seem to have a great hotel there with the two of you tending to their needs. Fresh eggs are the best!

Heavens, I do enjoy your blog entries. I am fascinated by all you two do in ‘retirement’!!!!!! You married a real rancher! He accomplishes so much with your assistance. We are now in our 80s and my husband’s health is declining. When we moved out to the country we were in our 60s and he was busy and happy. Reading your blog reminds me of those younger productive days.
