I'm glad the whole making piping thing worked out, even though it didn't get into the quilt... what if you just used black bias tape and sandwiched it between the layers with just a 1/4 inch or whatever poking out? That would lay flat, you just might have to fold it around the corners. I dunno. I shouldn't "help" any more.
