Oven Lovin'

I've had a Frigidaire gas stove for 22 years and as much cooking and baking as I do, I think I finally wore it out. Through the years, DH has replaced parts on multiple occasions and in the past 6 months or so, it has been  a crap shoot as to if it felt like baking or not. It was finally time for a new stove. It completely quit 2 weeks  ago and I can tell you that it's been no fun. In the big scheme of things, it's not a big deal. Others are dealing with much bigger issues, but I sure do miss my oven.

When I think of all the meals I've cooked and baked through the years, it makes me a little nostalgic and I kind of hate to see it go. Is it odd to become attached to an appliance? It has served us well through the years and I guess it's earned it's retirement.

So last week, I made a trip to town to scout out the possibilities. There's a Home Depot in town, but 95% of what they carry is glass top stoves and that just does not work with my cast iron collection. Besides, I'm a gas stove girl. In a perfect world, my dream stove would be one of those commercial 6 burner stoves and I'd have double ovens, but alas, that's not going to happen. My little kitchen is already cramped.

Then there are 2 local appliance stores so I popped in to each of those. We used to have a teeny, tiny Sears store, but it closed so the pickings are pretty slim when it comes to selection. Still, I think I hit the jackpot at store #1. I found this GE stove:

5 burners. Double oven. Gas. In the scratch and dent section. Yes, please!

There was only one itty bitty ding on one side that I couldn't even see when I tried to take  a picture. The delivery man's name is Magoo. How fun is that and he was a very sweet man. Had to take a farewell shot of my old stove as Magoo carted it off:

The bottom oven has a convection mode. I wan't looking for that, but I hear about them a lot. It came with the middle griddle and I added a center grate, but they sent the wrong grate so when I called and asked about it and a manual, Kent said, " Look in the bottom drawer." I told him it was a double oven and he told me to look there. I said, "No manual, but there's a pie and cookies in there." He laughed and said, "Already?!" Yes, sir, already!

I am celebrating! I am baking! Pie is on the menu!

Pie AND cookies!

Because I have 2 ovens!

Cue the Snoopy happy dance!

Oh how wonderful! I am so happy for you! What a beautiful stove, ha, yes I think a stove like this is gorgeous! That griddle in the middle will make wonderful pancakes and buttered toast. (a slice of bread slathered in butter and toasted face down until crispy and the back side soft and warm) Thinking about the old one, used 22 years, wouldn't it be interesting to figure how much it cost you for daily use? Probably less than ½ a cent a day! This one looks like it will be very happy in your home!

That is a great new stove! And I see some pretty good looking pot holders keeping it company. :)

We are looking to do a kitchen remodel soon, and I would love an oven something like that.

Finding a range on sale and having two ovens is fantastic! I love the conversation you had with the guy at the store - priceless.

Be aware that when one appliance dies, others follow suit. It happened at my house two years ago and made a major dent in my budget.

Super find! We always check the scratch and dent section. {grin} Be curious to hear how the double ovens work out in the long run ---- neat feature, thinks me. And I readily admit a terrible fondness for my current refrigerator. No shame in that! I sort of want to take it along with us if/when we ever move...

I am thrilled for you, Karin! With all the cooking you do for the masses, you NEED two ovens--and soon you will wonder how you ever managed without them. (Ask me how I know.)
The pie and cookies look scrumptious. I think I need to go preheat ONE of my ovens for some baking. : )

My parents bought a Frigidaire refrigerator when my sister was born and it lasted about 50 years! It was tiny but it was a workhorse. :) Love the stove! blessings, marlene

What a nice stove!! I have an oven (came with the house) that has two ovens. I had never had an electric stove, so I was not too thrilled with electric everything. I've gotten used to the electric oven, but still do not like electric burners. Your DH will love that you put it to good use immediately with cookies and pie. I'm thrilled for you!

Wait for me! I'll be right over! It looks so delicious, I really don't want to miss this. (lol.) Enjoy the new kitchen toy. ;^)

Our first house, which was 20 years old when we bought it n 1981, had a stove with a double oven. I quickly became spoiled by this luxury and made a double oven a priority for every house we've had since. I can't imagine cooking a big holiday meal with just one oven, though I know many people do. I have a gas cooktop and electric oven which, for me, is the best of both worlds. If only I didn't hate cooking so much.

Wow!! The new ovens work!!!! LOL!!! I know you will enjoy cooking and not wondering if the oven will stay on until the roast/pies/cookies/cakes finish baking. I'm very happy for you!!!

If anyone deserved a new stove it would be YOU. You cook more in a week than I do in four months almost. But we're retired and just the two of us so out the door we often go at mealtime.
I like the way you were going to write the word "quit" and it came out " QUILT" instead. I think that is a quilter's thing. I've done that so many times myself. Happy smile.
You really are an accomplished cook and now you have a new stove. Enjoy.
I do NOT want my husband to know about all the yummy things you make. But I enjoy the look and often write down the recipe.

We a bought a very similar gas range about 3 years ago and I'm very happy with it. I never use the griddle or center burner but I use both onens so often, I sometimes wonder how I ever managed without them.
Happy cooking to you ❤

I think it's hard to give up a known and loved piece of equipment but it looks like your new stove and ovens are settling in just fine. It looks like a great new purchase! I'd be hard-pressed to have two different things going into two ovens at the same time, though it might work if I had two timers.
