In the Kitchen & on the Road

 I haven't been in my sewing room in over a week. Empty freezers and all the apples we picked last week have taken priority.

The dehydrator has been going non-stop for a week and it's not done yet

Wednesday was applesauce making day. I know there are ways to make applesauce without peeling the apples, but those methods I've seen require you run everything through a mill or seive and I have neither. But those methods also produce smooth applesauce and my family likes a more rustic applesauce so I peel apples...lots and lots of apples. Until one day, when I am unable to and then I will break down and buy a food mill and they will have to get used to smooth applesauce. 😉

But it'll all be worth it and the house smells heavenly

Then we've been spending long days scouting the surrounding area for game. Hunting season hasn't begun yet, but you have to learn the country and have some idea of where the animals are living. DH drew tags for antelope, deer, and elk. We're hoping he'll have a successful season because we need to fill our freezers.

Soon after we left home on Sunday at 5:30, the full moon was just slipping  behind the mountains

And Some pretty country...being spoiled by wind turbines. Don't get me started.

And one really cool volcanic rock that DH brought back to show me when he walked back from glassing over that railroad track

We are rockhounds and bringing me a neat rock pretty much makes my day. A few years back he brought me this metate he found on the ranch and it's one of my favorite things

We've been spending a lot of time exploring and then coming home hungry and not wanting to cook. At least we now have applesauce. LOL.

Dried apples are always such a delicious snack and nice for the grands to eat while they're running around. I hope your husband gets plenty of meat this hunting season. Do you process it yourselves or do you take to a butcher shop to be processed and frozen?

I hope this link works for you. Try peeling apples with a drill. Use the peeler that looks like a cheese slicer. My husband and I team up to do this - he puts the apple on and runs the drill. I do the peeler. We can do a 5 gallon bucket of apples in 15 minutes.

I have never heard applesauce called rustic.☺️ We call it chunky and that’s how I like it too. Yum yum. Glad you are getting to enjoy the outdoors. It’s back in the ‘90’s here so back to my sewing room.

I like to eat my chunky applesauce with peanut butter. I take a spoonful of peanut butter then dunk it in applesauce, I take the applesauce off with a little peanut butter. It is so yummy!!! When I go to Eastern Oregon today, I will bring back apples and begin the process myself. :D Kara

I do not peel my apples for applesauce. The recipe I found online says to core and cut into chunks and then add a bit of water to crockpot. 6 hours on low - then use potato masher or immersion blender or blender to smooth it out a bit. Tup lid off crockpot for another couple hours til thickness you like.
