The Pile of Coats

For those of you who don't know, we live on and manage a 128,000 acre ranch in the desert SW. When you step into our home, you step into our mudroom / laundry room.  It's also a catch-all for things that need to go to the shop - barn - pickup - shed. And it's our coat closet:

😂 This is the state of my washer/dryer during coat season. We don't have an actual closet for coats, but we do have a coat rack in this room

As well as some hooks:

This is a lot of outerwear for 2 people. Four of these are mine. In DH's defense, he's outside all day, every day and more often than not we have 40-50° swings in a day here. He's got vests and jackets and coats and coveralls and wildrags and gloves and hats.

I try to keep things straightened up so does that pile of outerwear on the washer / dryer that I clear off multiple times a day bother me?

The other day DH walked in and I had the pile in my arms, trying to put a load of clothes in the washer. He chuckled, apologized, and asked me if it bothered me. My answer. No. Not even a little bit. Because that pile of clothes means you're here and healthy enough to do what you love and you're home and I wouldn't want it any other way.

A great post! It brings back memories of the porch on the farm - overboots, snow boots, Carharts, overalls, irrigation boots, etc.

I love your blog. Won't try to explain why as I would sound maudlin but I check every day. Love the idea and comment about his coats!!!

Fortunately we have a separate entrance for visitors. Our mud room was too small when all 3 of our children had outerwear also. Everyone had designated hooks/nails. The children are gone now and the farmer and I can really spread out our clothing items.

Oh gosh, I have a coat closet and it's just me. There are times I look at all the coats and think I need to donate a few. Then I start looking at them thinking 'I really love this one' and 'this one's cute' or 'this one's very warm' and I wind up usually keeping them all though I have managed to clear out a very few. I'm TERRIBLE about coats but I do donate lots of other stuff. LOL

What a lovely post. I can relate. DH and DS1 work on dams most of the year. The dirty water, the gunk from the machines, the oil they spray on every piece, it all gets onto their clothes. Working so close to rivers usually makes the temperature cold and damp. They need heavy and thick clothing. Needless to say, I can't put all of their clothes in one load. It always takes multiple loads to wash it all. My son left this morning for the north where he will stay for a week to work on an electric dam there. I got all his working clothes cleaned over the weekend and he said "Sorry, Mom, for all the work." I said, "don't be. I'm glad you have a job when so many don't." It's all part of life and laundry rooms weren't meant to be pretty (in my book, lol). ;^)

We had the same problem here. Thankfully, my washer/dryer is in another room and is a stackable. But we always have coats, scarves, jackets, vests, coveralls, hats, gloves, buckets, boots, cleats, etc. strung all over the downstairs every winter. So this past October, I remodeled our mudroom entry so that we would have a better place to put it all. ALL the gloves and hats in one place, ALL the boots in one place, a place for the boot dryer, all the coats hung up in one big nice row. And no more piles in other places. We can find our flashlights, sorting sticks, tools, etc. more easily. I'm so glad I took the time to do it, even tho I had to do it with a broken elbow to beat the weather! So worth it. And like you, I won't complain about any of it because it means he's still here and doing it, and we are blessed to even have so many coats and hats and boots!

Awww...how sweet! Time becomes more precious as we grow older. I've been married 42 years and I know we have more years behind us than we do ahead of us. I'm grateful for every single boring, monotonous, routine day.

Yup, life on the farm/ranch. A never ending supply of ‘everyday clothes’. That’s what I call them. Our old house was a porch, then the kitchen…same deal. Then we built a new house 30+ years ago…have all the out door wear downstairs…with a stairway to the basement In tHe garage! Their coats and coveralls were all warm! Perfect! Otherwise then would bring the stuff into the kitchen in the morning to warm up….with four kids in the house….well, you get the picture. Now it’s just hubby and me. He peels his coverall off on the run in the entry…. One of my friends came to pick up something while we were gone. Her comment was that he must have been in a hurry! Haha. Nope.. no big deal, don’t stress about the small stuff!
