Time in a Bottle

If all of this technology we keep inventing is supposed to save us time, then why does it seem there is less time these days?

I mean, even Jim Croce said there never seems to be enough time to do the things you wanna do, and that was back in 1973!

I know I have very intelligent readers and I am stumped, so I figured y'all would have the answer.

Are we just trying to do more? I mean we're always busy around here and I imagine y'all aren't any different. I know that our pace out here is different from a lot of peoples'.

I don't have to deal with being in an office at a certain time or dealing with people on a daily basis. Our kids are grown so I don't have to shuffle them to school, although we homeschooled, or from this lesson to that practice. I don't have to sit in rush hour traffic or commute. So I should have enough time to fill a barn.

We do work 7 days a week and we don't have a typical 9-5 work day. I don't spend hours on the computer although I love catching up with y'all on your blogs. I'm a horrible FB friend. Honestly, I do not get on there, and I don't tweet. Pinterest sucked me in one day, but then I burned the cookies.

And still, I get up early, turn around, blink, and the day is gone.

I'm not on a schedule. I'm not a clock watcher. I don't set an alarm. They make me grumpy.

I vowed to improve corresponding with people this year. You know, the old fashioned way. With a card or note in the mail. I don't feel as if I am doing a very good job of it. I need more time, but I'm trying to make that more of a priority. I sat down and wrote a couple of letters the other day...by hand. Do people still do that?

I make lists, and when I can find them, they are very helpful. LOL

I spend a lot of time looking for my reading glasses. A few years ago my arms got too short, and I found out that reading glasses are mandatory. I had no idea that arm length corresponded with eyesight. I walk around much of the day patting my head and chest looking for them. Maybe that's where my time goes. I find them in the strangest places. Yesterday they were in the chicken coop. The day before, in a sack of horse feed. One day I won't have any and the next day where will be 2 on my head, 1 hooked to my shirt, 1 in my pocket and 3 pair next to me. I thought I was too young for this.

Is this going to get worse?

In about 10 years is our daughter going to dig this post up and point to it and say, "THIS is where it started"?

I have to say though, although the kids grew up too fast, looking at the big picture, I DO get to spend every day with the one I want to go through time with, and that makes me feel incredibly blessed.

I didn't intend for this to be a 'forgetful' post. I was just wondering why time seems to get away from me. And those of you who are spring chickens...and know not of what I speak...

it'll happen. Just give it...

time.

Sadly, I don't have any sage advice for you. Those are all the same questions I ask myself. LOL

My life is very simple (VERY) and I still don't have hours in the day. Of course many would say I don't make the best use of my time. They're probably right. LOL

Just keep doing what you're doing and don't hurt yourself when you pat yourself on the head and/or chest. LOL

Wow! I going to keep watching to see if anyone comes up with a good answer...because I am suffering too! I work outside my home and I spend at least 50 to 60 hours at work and yet, I come home feeling like I will never get caught up. I have these great plans to sew, quilt, embroider, etc. when I get home and I am lucky if I eat a bite, take a a bath, read a few e-mails and go to bed. I do manage to get up at 5 a.m. and that is my quiet time. I get to sew about 1 hour each morning. I know that part of it is I am getting older (59 this year) but I have a modern phone, computers home and office, blue tooth, etc. I don't have family so I don't have to cook, clean, wash clothes and all that until I need to. Thanks for putting in to words what I have been feeling for quite a few years. I think perhaps we need to simplify life a little.

I am convinced that the Lord has changed the structure of time. Oh, we may still see days, weeks, months on the calendar, and watches & clocks may tick off 60 seconds, 60 minutes, 24 hours, but those times have changed! He can change time and we'd not know other than it seems to speed by like a lightning bolt! Yep, I'm right there with you - I know it was just yesterday when something happened and then I check and it's been 5 or 10 years ago :S

Why does it seem that the older I get , the less time there is in a day? I thought as you get older, you had "more time". Nope, not me. For the life of me, I cannot figure this dilemna out.

The mystery is as you get older, you have more interests and you want to do more things that you didn't get to do when you had to work for someone else in their business. Now that your time is your own (well almost) it seems like you have to cram everything you "wanted to do" years before into every minute of the day. I took the leap and got contacts when I turned 50, just so I could keep up with my glasses. When I don't wear them, I'm in the same boat as you -- where did I leave them last??? LOL
We enjoy life to the fullest and it just takes more time when you do!! But we wouldn't want it any other way, right??

I heard once that time doesn't go as far (in our minds) as we age, because of its relationship to our whole preceeding lives. A day now is a much smaller percentage than one say when we were 25.

Interestingly enough, the same can be said for physical size. Went back to my childhood home and the distance from the house to the barn that used to seem so big, is now a short hop and a skip. But I was a small percentage of my present self when I made the trek as a child.

My kids say time drags; my time seems to go like a NASCAR race...usually winding up with me chasing my own tail. What did we do without cell phones and IM and my personal favorite, the microwave? As for glasses, I got my first pair of bifocals at 38...I'm 39.

My Dad used to say, the older you get the faster time goes by, you'll look up one day and say where have all those years gone. My Dad was right and if I could, I would tell him how wise he was. He would have liked that !

Very thought provoking posting today. I'll toss out what I think and what works for me. First of all, go to the dollar store (or Dollar Tree) and buy at least 20 pair of glasses. Put them everywhere you light. I have 2 in the kitchen and 3 in the living room. I see well at a distance so can't stand to walk around wearing them so take them off as I move about the house.
Certainly we have more "leisure" activities and I love them, quilting, computers and TV and I'm sure you like everyone else have a favorite hobby. They all take time, some so much we become slaves to them. I often think of the pioneer woman without electricity, preparing large meals for hard working men, churning, baking bread, washing clothes, caring for numerous children, then at the end of the day singing "The end of a Perfect Day."
Today we have so many distractions that are hard to ignore. We strive for peace which means we have had to limit many distractions and now I find I don't really miss them.
I call and talk a few minutes rather than write. List, especially shopping list save time and frustration. We try to do the important things first and let others slide until another day.
Sorry this has been so long, but you've made me think and be thankful for my blessings.

LOL! I loved reading your comments as much as your post. It's so true. My life resonates with much of yours ... except I love social media and especially pinterest. LOL! Darling friend, when someone sends you an answer that cuts it for you, will you send it along to me, please?!? :)

I find the same. The older I get the quicker time goes. I was kinda hoping it slowed down again once kids leave home (mine are little) but it seems it doesn't.

This is the very best post ever...sadly I have no good advice...my day seems to start and then it's done...we're up before the sun even thinks about coming up and I still don't know where the day goes. My mom always said "Christmas comes faster every year" I used to think that was the silliest thing ever...I'm sure she's looking down now and laughing at me...I must admit she was so right.

Very thought provoking -- I am right in there with you. I get up, go to work, come home, fix dinner, clean up kitchen, sit down to relax, look up and the clock says 11:00 pm. All the things our parents told us about time are coming true. I try to enjoy each day, not worry about tomorrow but alas -- it is difficult to do. Sometimes I succeed, but most of the time I fail to stop and smell the roses.

First, I've been reading your blog for a few months (got here from Judy L's blog) and I'm enjoying it so much.

Second, ditto to everything you say. Time (and I'm a retired teacher, working part time at a quilt shop for fun) is just whizzing by. I'm out of time so often, but I am so thankful that I, too, get to spend it with the one I married--forty-one years ago.

Some days, when I think to ask, God does seem to make the time work in my favor though. I need to remember that more often. :-)
