Reminiscing in the Kitchen

OK..maybe Fall Works aren't over. :) We're shipping our calves this week. Since we've got the crew together, we're taking advantage of more men in the saddle and moving some things around. That means I'm back in the kitchen for 3 or 4 days.

Seems all I do is think about food. I make lists about food. I cook food. I clean up after people who eat food. I scour recipes for new food.

Don't get me wrong. I love cooking for the crew, and I am raring to go this week, but after this Saturday, I am going on strike. I will be plumb wore out. Yes, I am getting old.

Years ago I did this with a bunkhouse filled with men, 3 meals a day, and two little chiddlers clinging to my apron strings pleading to, "Go wiff Daddy" , "I wide wiff the cwew", and "I big 'nuff now". Not to mention that I was left with said chiddlers who were completely distraught and collapsed into puddles of tears when the 'cwew' jingled out the door without them. It was quite a sight to see them shuffle into the kitchen in their jammies, hopeful expressions on their little faces, dragging their ropes. Oh my!

Does it make me an awful Mama that the memory warms my heart as it brings tears to my eyes? Suddenly, my kitchen seems just a bit too empty this morning.

I'll be thinking about you feeding the cwew this week, then I'll walk the picket line with you Saturday!!! You NEED some sew time. I can picture how disappointed the young ones were when left behind. Sweet poignant memories for you.

What a sweet post!

You can look forward to grand babies tugging the apron strings and dragging ropes into the kitchen in a few years, right?

I totally get that...my home is empty now too and it's lonely sometimes...
Have a great week filled with extra UMPH!

My parents shipped calves this last week, too. Get some rest and reward yourself with some sewing.

That makes you a wonderful mom! Looking back on those memories and remembering our children each step of the way is what gets us through the days without them.

Don't work too hard! I know the help appreciates your good cooking.

Our Drew was Tracy's little cowboy. He had been hurt in an accident (ruptured Spleen) and wasn't cleared to ride yet, When Tracy and the hired men rode out Drew stood softly crying at the yard gate. I heard Tracy say to the men "Just keep riding boys, don't look back just keep riding" It was one of the hardest things for him to do and still brings a tear to his eye.
