Hitting the Fabric Jackpot

On Monday I went to Lubbock with my in-laws. My FIL had a doctor's appointment and I went along to help drive. It's a 5 hr trip one way for them. My MIL and I had an ulterior motive too. The quilt shop in Lubbock was closing down. I was there in May with Marquita and Lora and we were told the sad news. The owner is retiring and they were beginning to liquidate in June. So we just had to stick our noses inside. I should have taken pictures, but I was a little overwhelmed. Everything was 75% off, and the place was packed. It was comical to watch, but it didn't take long for us to join the insanity. I was looking for a backing, but didn't have any luck, but let's just say I did not go home empty handed. However, I did leave with only one sack. And I didn't even fill it up.  My desire to round out my stash of 'kind of' reproduction prints has been achieved. That doesn't look like 22 yds of fabric, does it?

This store had lots of Thimbleberry kinds of fabrics. Perfect for adding to my Granny Square blocks and a few other projects that are waiting in the wings.

I have some odds and ends thrown in, but I just could not get over that price. Apparently I wasn't the only one. One lady had 5 kitchen sized trash bags stacked up with cut fabric stuffed inside and they were still cutting. And another lady spent $600, but said she had $1000 to spend so she went back for $400 more. That's a lot of fabric at $2.72 / yd. Surely she was buying for an organization that made quilts for donation. What a great deal.

I felt for those poor ladies cutting. How many pairs of scissors do you think they wore out? :) My hands wouldn't even work the next day if I cut all day like that. They said they had donuts to keep them going. LOL

It was insane. One gentleman came in and sat patiently, waiting on his wife. I wonder what was going through his mind as he surveyed the onslaught.

As for me, I see lots of cutting in my future.

There are scrap quilts on the agenda. Well, as soon as I am released from cocklebur duty. :)

What a deal!! So sad the quilt shop is closing. I haven't been to Lubbock in years, but still have family there. It was a visit to a quilt store in Lubbock that sparked my enthusiasm and started me on this long and glorious path of quilting so many years ago!!

Deborah and Laverne - thank you for taking the time to leave comments, but y'all show up as non-reply bloggers so I cannot reply back. if if you'll leave me an email contact I'll be sure and answer back.

Laverne - no, we've never attended the Texas Ranch Roundup. It's too far for us. Our local Ranch Rodeo is this weekend too.
So glad to heat y'all have had rain. We have too. At least parts of the ranch have. It's been spotty around here, but we're very thankful for what we have received and your prayers are greatly appreciated.
My in-laws are doing well - thank you. I'm just very glad that we can help. They come from stock that just does not like to ask. :)

Fantastic! I'm happy for all those who got the bargains and a little sad that the shop must close as that is happening more and more in this economy.

Lucky, lucky you! Does your MIL sew or quilt? Hope so. Love your selection. Our local quilt shop is expanding, now Suzie Q has added on to her retreat and will soon move her shop to a new building adjacent to the old retreat building which use to be an assisted care facility. What fun she's having!

That fabric is a steal! I love your blog. I found it while googling strippy trip around the world. You made a gorgeous quilt & love the photos in the hay & with your horses. I grew up on a farm & that brought back sweet memories. :)

Wow! That is absolutely fantastic! So glad you got to cash in on that amazing deal! :-) What a blessing from the Lord.

My husband saw me reading your post and noticed the title, so I told him a little of what you said. His comment: "We'd have to get a trailer to tow behind the car." LOL He does know me. ;-) But, he still takes me to fabric stores once in awhile. :-D

Wow!! Good for you for striking it "rich" in fabric. It's your reward for being a good daughter in law.

You don't mention how large your bag was! I'm glad you were able to help out with the driving; that can be a long ride, young or old(er). I'm also glad that you found a guiltless way to round out your stash. :) Better finish up that cockleburr duty soon, I'm on my way in less than four weeks! Woohoo! Enjoy your weekend with C.

WOW what a gold mine of fabrics. That price is unbelievable too. What a deal. Glad it was in Texas and not close to me. I do not need more fabric, but at that price I would not have been able to pass it up!!

That is quite a bargain! I thought $5 was good. BFF and I are going to LQS tomorrow for their State Fair sale. 300 bolts @ $5. They usually have great stuff, batiks, etc. Love the insulated 'jars'!
