Pinwheel Polka Quilt Top

I know, I am posting a lot of quilt finishes lately. I didn't finish anything the first half of the year and now they are all coming together at once, but most of them have been on the assembly line for a few years. I have 2 more here that need binding and I'm picking one up from Jackie on Monday - that one needs to be finished first. Sometimes I feel like I'm spinning my wheels and not finishing anything so this feels pretty good.

This little quilt began in June 2019 with some cute charm squares:

And a simple plan. I like simple and I'm a pretty simple girl.
Make some pinwheels and alternate with a charm square.

Wait.
Let's put it on point.
Sashing might be good.
Oh, let's add cornerstones.
Sigh.
I'm sure a pattern exists somewhere for a quilt like this,

but I took the road less traveled and made it up along the way.

And let Jackie work her magic

I had enough of that pretty blue print for the border and I used a blue Kona for the binding:

And at 60"x60", I really like the end result, but next time, I hope I can keep things simple and put the pinwheels and charm squares in the right spots.  I never even noticed that I mixed a few up until just before I hit the button to publish this post. Funny how this last photo camouflages my 'well fiddlesticks' mistake. Now I really will need to make it again - just to prove I can make it right, but since there is no pattern, we'll just say it IS right and that the mixed up blocks just add character. 😉

Good morning Karin, what a darling quilt, mistakes and all! Funny how you didn't catch that ;) I like the colors and the movement of this quilt. I think you not keeping it 'simple' makes for a great quilt. Have a lovely day.

Quilts are artistic creations. I truly don't think they absolutely have to fit a pattern. They express a little freedom. One of my first quilts was a panel that I wanted bigger so I made up borders as I went along. I found out that was beyond some people's comprehension. It was my quilt my way. This is your quilt your way. I love quilting a lot more that way.

Love the quilt and the misplaced squares. I have a collection of quilts from grandma's and great-grandma's. Before I started quilting, I used to pull them out occasionally and admire them. At one point I thought to myself, "I can do that." If they had been perfectly put together and every hand stitch in place, I never would have thought that. I love all of the "mistakes" and crooked stitches, it's encouraging to me and makes them all the more endearing.

Your "mistake" is more of a design element and I think it would be lovely done like that without the spinning element!

This is a very happy quilt, and your "complications" add to the charm. :)

It’s perfect!! Love the fact that I’m not the only one to take artistic license with my quilts that don’t have patterns. Someone will really love it!! Glad you are racking up the finishes!

What a bright, happy quilt. They are beautiful fabrics that remind me of fabrics I saw in my grandmother's and our houses when I was a child. I didn't notice any blocks out of place until you mentioned it. They are certainly not obvious and, as you say, it's your pattern, your placement. And I think it's perfect! Great quilt!

I love your little happy quilt and if you had not pointed it out, I would not have noticed anything wrong. It isn't. It's just a HAPPY quilt.
