A Southwestern Wallhanging

Last fall I finished another old UFO, but life has directed me away from quilt-y endeavors and blog post writing has taken a back seat so today I'm playing catch up. Years ago, I saw this photo in an old quilting magazine and loved the design.

There was no pattern, but it was a HST challenge so I sketched it out and pulled fabrics from my stash, drawing from the pillows on the bed:

I chose 4" blocks and once I broke everything down, it turned out to be a 12 x 14 block setting. I worked everything out in EQ7 which I never use because I don't like sitting at the computer, but I fumbled through it and it helped me visualize the individual blocks:

I don't really make wall hangings, but I like the way this turned out.

When I started it, I had installed a rod across a wall to hang it, but since then I have painted the wall and I haven't put the rod back up. I now have a quilt ladder there so I'll have to reconfigure things, but I hadn't painted when I finished piecing it:

And yes, I know the 70's paneling needs to go, but we would need to sheet rock and that is NOT happening  during this drought. You might be wondering what the drought has to do with sheet rock. Running a ranch during a multi-year drought means running it on a shoestring...make that half a shoe string so painting was the only option.

This little quilt finishes at 58" x 62"

I am trying to use things from my stash so this quilt gets a solid backing

with a brown sketch binding:

The southwestern pattern Jackie quilted across it gave it such great texture:

I took these photos back in October when we were still soaking in a green yard

OK, enough with the quilts - we're ready for supper

Very pretty; great colors too! That size is a lap quilt to me since I am only 5' tall! Ha!

Good morning Karin, Very nice! I am in the process of making up a southwestern/navajo style quilt right now! I like the colors of your quilt, fits right in there with your '70s paneling (which I have too! LOL). Have a great day!

That is so pretty and a good sized wallhanging! had a lot of paneling when I moved in here and had quite a bit taken out (and no sheetrock damage at all!!). But there's more to be done in the future.

That turned out beautifully!! You and Jackie do good teamwork. 58 x 62? Funny how size is a matter of perspective. That's a fairly large quilt, to my way of thinking!

I would totally not sheetrock that wall, but then I'm partial to painted paneling. :~) Lovely wall hanging! I'm not a quilter, but I always wanted to be. The southwest colors are some of my husband's favorites.

Glad you're beginning to regain your footing a little, and yes, staying busy helps.

I grew up in Wichita Falls, left there with the hubby in 1995, moved around, came back to TX (San Antonio) for a few years, and now we've settled--after 18 moves!--in eastern Arizona. It's true that you can take the gal out of Texas, but you can never take Texas outta the gal.

Best wishes for a 2021 that gives you what you need.

Our previous home had similarly dark paneling. After 10+ years of every day feeling dark and dreary I rustled up some courage, did some research and painted that dark paneling a creamy white color. I remember washing the walls but didn't have to apply a special primer. I used a satin-finish latex paint. It worked very well and there was nary a chip or peeling spot the day we moved 5 years later. On one of your errands day, perhaps you could stop at a local paint store to learn what needs to be done to prep the walls. Just food for thought.

I love this quilt. I fully understand why it caught your eye in the magazine. Love the colour choice too. It is very southwestern. Congrats on getting it finished. Don't get rid of the paneling wall. It will be the trend in a few more years, like everything else it seems. ;^)
